Social Studies Philosophy
The overall aim of the Social Studies program at USL is to provide students with a better understanding of the world and its people, and how the different peoples and cultures of the world have developed over time by interacting with their environment and with each other. Students are encouraged to appreciate their own national and cultural heritage as well as those of others, culminating in a sense of multicultural awareness which will prepare them for an increasingly interdependent world. Students will engage in reading and writing assignments, internet research projects, class discussions and debates, brainstorming, and other activities aimed at stimulating creative and critical thinking. Finally, students are encouraged to respect others’ opinions and develop a sense of civic and social responsibility rooted in democracy and respect for human rights.
